What is the difference between a small-block and big-block engine?

wcusoccerguy0422 asked:
The new LS7 engine by GM (in the Corvette Z06) is 427 cubic inches. Why is this a small block when the previous 427 was a big-block engine? What is the difference in the set up of the engines? I know that the cylinder bores are bigger in the new engine and the connecting rods are titanium, but what is the difference between a small-block and a big-block engine?
So what I am gathering from other websites is that classifying either a small-block or a big-block has nothing to do with displacement, but the distance between the middle of each bore. So is there a specific distance between the bores that classifies the engine as small-block or big-block? And note to the GM ASE ceritified person that answered: every website that I have looked at (rssportscars.com, wikipedia.com, superchevy.com, gmgoodwrench.com) all say that the LS7 is a small-block engine that uses the same architecture of a LS2 engine, just a larger bore and a longer stroke.

My car service engine light came on. How long do i have to fix it?

My two cents asked:
I have a 2003 mitsubishi eclipse. Its over 150,000 miles on it. I just forked out 515.00 dollars for new brake pads and roaters. And 50.00 dollars for a oil change and flush. I don’t get paid for another two weeks and the engine light came on 4 days ago. On monday i took it to an Auto Zone and they plugged in something to the inside of my car. Which narrowed it down to 4 things.
1. Defective, loose or missing fuel cap
2. EVAP canister broke, hose cracked or not connected
3. Purge or vent solenoid defective
4. Vacuum leak at engine
My fuel cap is not loose or missing and thats all i know. But i need to know how much time do i have to get this fixed as i don’t get paid for another two weeks.

Is it worth the effort to replace the engine and electrical after a engine fire?
by admin on Jun.06, 2009, under Maintenance Repairs
Onyx asked:
I recently had a fire in the engine compartment in my 1982 El Camino Conquista, and it basically destroyed that whole area. Is it even possible to replace all the electrical in that area and replace the engine for a reasonable price?

Is an engine starter considered part of the engine itself?
by admin on Jun.05, 2009, under Maintenance Repairs
Fran B asked:
I just had my engine replaced in my truck. I think that the starter has a dead spot. Should the mechanic have included a new or at least a working starter in the cost of the engine replacement?

What is the way to change oil on a new small engine?
by admin on Jun.05, 2009, under Maintenance Repairs
Tman asked:
I just bought a new 6.5 horsepower, 4 stroke engine from Harbor Freight. After putting the oil in for the first time, how long should you run the engine until you change it again? Or do you only have to put oil in the engine once when its new, and then change it after it has actually gotten old? I am asking this because I heard that metal scraps can go into the oil the first time it is used. Thanks!

What starts a golf cart engine when you press the gas pedal?
by admin on Jun.04, 2009, under Maintenance Repairs
Jason asked:
Some golf carts’ engine start when the gas pedal is pressed. It’s off until the gas pedal is touched and then it starts. I’m not talking about electric carts, I’m talking about an engine. I’m wanting to make an engine do this and I can’t find what makes that happen. I don’t have the best of knowledge with engines but I do know how an engine works and most part names. I’ve also rebuilt my go-cart engine. If anyone can help it would be most appreciated.

How is a jet engine put together?
by admin on May.30, 2009, under Aircraft
mirandalime asked:
Does anyone know the process of how a jet engine is put together? I am specifically looking to find out if there is a lot of repetitive motion involved for mechanics putting the engine together on an assembly line. Thanks!
